The Irish Blessing

What is the significance of the Irish blessing?

The Irish Blessing is a cherished tradition. It is most often associated with well-wishes, protection, and good fortune. Who wouldn’t want all of those? You don’t have to ask me twice if this sounds good to me!  The blessings are rooted in Celtic spirituality, Christian influences, and the Irish people’s connection to nature and community.

Although I have yet to see any traces of Irish ancestry in my own Ancestry DNA findings, I find it interesting that a couple of my children and grandchildren are of Irish decent. Interesting little fact about me, I was scheduled for a C-section back in 2006 for March 17, which happens to be St. Patrick’s Day, however, my daughter was born on the 16th. She would have been a St. Patty’s Day baby and I would have loved that, she on the other hand, I am not sure would agree. She likes having her own little day of celebration!

I have always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day which is part of the Irish celebrations on the 17th of March every year. I decorate with green, and little buckets of gold coins paired with leprechauns, and four leaf clovers. I have always have a cute little framed picture of the Irish Blessing but until this week hadn’t really ever sought the meaning behind it.

It really is quite interesting and seriously who doesn’t want to be part of expressing goodwill, celebrating cultural heritage and celebrating the harmony of nature. Did you know that the Irish Blessing is often recited at weddings, funerals, graduations, and other major milestones to offer encouragement, comfort, or hope?

I am including a free downloadable printable of an “Irish Blessing” for you if you sign up for email list HERE. I hope you enjoy it, I know I will be getting a little crafty with mine very soon and will be back to post about it!
